My lady friend and I went to see the movie, Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art this week and it was fantastic.

Having the title sequence of the film set to 'Salt Peanuts', by Dizzy Gillespie, is appropriate on many levels. Bebop broke new ground in Jazz music, moving beyond the popular songs of the 20s and 30s into something more intellectually and musically challenging. The creators of this music where men of supreme talent (Dizzy, Bird, Monk, Powell...etc), but some could not overcome their self-destructive behaviour. I can't help but think that the director of this film, Tamara Davis, had this in mind when she choose the music for the film.

Look out for GQ's Glenn O'Brien (a.k.a. The Style Guy), who features prominently throughout the film.

My lady friend and I were in New York City during Restaurant Week, and we took advantage of the $25 prix fixe lunch menu at two Manhattan restaurants which we regularly could not afford: Shang, Brasserie 8 1/2. We also made our way to Benchmark in Brooklyn's Park Slope district for an amazing diner. These are definitely three restaurants that you should try the next time you are in NYC, if you wallet can handle it, of course.

J. Crew is a store that hasn't yet come to Canada, but my lady friend and I were lucky enough to get to shop their summer sales while they were in full swing. One of my best finds was an orange 100% cashmere sweater for...wait for it... $41! My student budget would not allow me to afford the $188 price tag, but the sale that the Rockefeller Centre store has is incredible. If you have the chance to check it out please do, the colours and sizes seem to be going quickly.

Where are all the Gentlemen?

I have been a reader of Gentlemen's Quarterly for almost 15 years. It has taught me many things about food (thank you Alan Richman), etiquette, and of course style. Over the years the magazine has had to adjust to changing times, in both fashion and social norms. It is hard to imagine how a man in 1966 would have reacted to seeing Tyra Banks in an 'almost-there' bikini on the cover of GQ next to JKF, James Bond (the orignal) and Cary Grant.

And although some readers have complained about the increased presence of scantily-clad woman on the cover of GQ, it is easy to forgive the inclusion of beautiful women on the cover of a men's magazine:

But when Taylor Lautner makes the cover of my beloved GQ, a little piece of me dies inside.

If you are a 16 year old girl and have read all of the Twighlight books you are probably excited about July's cover model, but I for one am thoroughly disappointed. Gentlemen's Quarterly no longer comes out once every four months, but hopefully it can live up to the first part of its title. Bring back the Gentlemen.

Recently acquired Club Monaco Howe Suit (Wright Fit).

Conceived by former Thom Brown designer Timothy Farah, Club Monaco's line of suits pack a serious sartorial punch, at an affordable price. They feature a shorter jacket, high arm holes, working buttonholes and narrow lapels; so you get the look of a Brooks Brothers Black Fleece suit, without needing to take out a bank loan.

The suits come in two styles, the Kennedy fit (traditional) and the Wright fit (slim), and are sold as separates (jacket and pants). I bought the Wright model today in a pinstripe grey, and it fits great. One word of advice: try on one size bigger than you are used to wearing, the suits may be made a little bit 'snug' for some tastes.

I will soon be in the market for a three-piece-suit and I thought that Daniel Craig would be the perfect inspiration. The one thing that he seems to get right, when many other men get wrong, is the height of the top button on the waistcoat: low enough to show a healthy portion of his shirt and tie, but high enough above the top button of his jacket (one or two buttons preferably) so that things don't get too crowded around his midsection.

Reader Question: Messenger Bags

Question:

Do you have any strong feelings about messenger bags? Specifically, I am a bit torn between the north/south versus the east/west styles.

Answer:

Unfortunately, we men do not have a lot of options available to us in when it comes to bags. Woman (as is usually the case) have a multitude of options for different situations, and in different colors to choose from. However, the one style rule that I always try to follow is function over form, and bags cannot escape this rule's graps. For school I use my incase laptop back pack:

It is functional enough to hold all of my essential gear (books and Macbook), but I don't look like I am going on a 8 day backpacking trip into the Andes. When I am lucky enough to travel I take my soft leather Rudsak brief case, but one bag that I do not have in my arsenal is a messenger. I am partial to the 'East/West' style of messenger bag in a simple canvas or leather:

However, if it is large enough (and does not look like a travel purse) I can't object to the 'North/West' style:

The $300 T-Shirt

It is always discouraging to me when I see simple cotton T-shirts that are sold for $200 and $300 dollars by labels like Tom Ford and Michael Bastian. Unfortunately, it looks like the venerable Italian suit maker Brioni is going down that same road. I discovered this disappointing news through an article from the New York Times entitled, Brioni, Suitmaker to Presidents, Adpats to Crisis. Obviously, it has become very difficult for people to justify spending $4,000 of their hard earned cash on anything material, let alone a suit. However, does buying a T-shirt for $250, that will last a year or three, make more or less sense than buying a suit that will last you a life time? One thing that I did enjoy seeing in the piece were the accompanying pictures of Brioni's factory and tailoring school in Penne.
